Crystal Apple Award Ceremony

at St. John Bosco School

November 14, 2003

To show appreciation to our area's finest educators, four times a year, The Plain Dealer accepts nominations for the Crystal Apple Award.  This award is a tribute to outstanding teachers currently teaching full-time (grades K-12) in a school system within Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Summit, Portage, Geauga and Medina counties.

Students are encouraged to write a letter of 150 words or less explaining five reasons why their teacher deserves this honor.  Hundreds of letters are submitted each contest period in which an independent panel of judges select the very best teachers from the grade categories: Kindergarten-5, 6-8, 9-12.   One winner is selected in each of the three categories for all four contests for a total of 12 winners each school year.

A Crystal Apple Awards banquet is held in May of each year honoring the teachers who received the award along with the students who nominated them throughout the school year.

The award winning letter written by one of our students.

Mrs. Mitchell is a good teacher because when we were having trouble with a subject, she would make a game to help us understand it.  It is because of Mrs. Mitchell's class that I like school so much.  When my mom died, Mrs. Mitchell organized some people to make dinners for me, my little sister and my dad every Tuesday night.  I want to thank her for all she did."
