Eighth Grade Work

Social Studies Class

The eighth graders read two historical novels this year based on events from World War II. The Holocaust was discussed in detail.

The Diary of Anne Frank

Author: Anne Frank

Student Summary: Frank's diary is an account of people threatened with imminent death, a depiction of experiences and problems common to young adults, and an examination of universal moral issues. It was written as a s private journal, which she did not live to see published.

Summer of My German Soldier

Author: Bette Greene

Student Summary: The plot centers on the friendship between a German prisoner of war housed at an Arkansas camp and Patty Bergen, a young Jewish girl who lives nearby.

The students then used the school’s wireless laptop technology to view sites relating to World War II. Below are sites the students visited.

Topic: Concentration Camps

The finale was when the student went to hear a Holocaust survivor speak.  Students visited the Temple Shaarey Tikvah in Beachwood.  While there, the Rabbi spoke about the Jewish faith, traditions, and symbols.  Students then toured a museum of Holocaust artifacts.  A Holocaust survivor spoke of his experience as a young man in a concentration camp, his relocation to the United States and his eventual return to the camp.  The overall theme was tolerance and forgiveness.

Science Class Activities

The eighth graders built roller coasters in Science class.  They were studying forces: such as motion, inertia, gravity, friction, momentum, air resistance, speed, and velocity.  The tracks were made from foam pipe insulation. The coasters had to have an initial hill, a complete loop, a second hill and even a jump. Marbles and ball bearing were used to run down the tracks.
