The first graders have been learning about New Years Around the world. We have studied the following countries: Brazil, United States, Japan, China, Greece, Austria, Russia and Scotland. We have written about each country and made our own atlas to show where these countries are located. In addition to learning about the people and climate of each country, we have made a craft to represent a New Years tradition in the country. We are also learning to say "Happy New Year" in the languages of each country studied. At the end of January, we will conclude our studies with a New Years celebration with our parents.
In the fall, the first graders learned about apples. We studied Johnny Appleseed and sampled several apple foods. We learned how apples grow and found a star hidden inside the apple by slicing it from side to side. We concluded our apple studies by visiting Mapleside Apple Farm. We were able to see how apples are prepared for making cider. We picked our own apples, right off of the tree!
In November, the first graders studied the Curious George books written by H.A. Rey. This classic book series follows the adventures of a very curious monkey. We enjoyed comparing the many Curious George books and reading about all of the ways that George found trouble! On November 19 we enjoyed a live performance of Curious George at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.
