SJB Letter from the Principal

April 2008
    Dear Saint John Bosco Families,

Happy Easter! We celebrate this holiest day of the church year with Mass and prayers for one another. From the faculty and staff of SJB School, may the blessings of the Lord be with each of you.

There should be few interruptions in learning in the next two months. April, May and the first week of June are the fourth quarter of the 2007-2008 school year. This last quarter is just as important as the first three, as these grades (including effort and conduct) are averaged with the other three quarters for the final grade for the permanent record card. More important than grades, however, is the fact that there is a great amount of learning that must be done in nine weeks of school.

For effective learning to take place, students need to act in a respectful and responsible fashion. It may be tempting at times to adopt an attitude of caring less about behavior because the school is closing. Please pray about this and take the time necessary to talk with your child about his/her behavior. The end of this school year is vital to their education. Children take notice of what the adults in their lives are saying and acting, possibly without us even realizing it. Please be positive with each other as we finish this school year.

As we make plans for the end of the school year, there are a few ideas that are being considered. We are working out details for a final Mass with the parish with plans to invite alumni along with former teachers and administrators. We will have a “camera” day so that the students will be allowed to take photos with friends. I encourage anyone with a good idea to celebrate the end of an era with the closing of the school to send a note of explanation into the school office. I know that there are many creative minds out there!

Speaking of creative minds, I want to take a minute to thank the parents who organized the Easter flower sale – proceeds going to the teachers of SJB. I know that none of them want any recognition, but I think that their efforts and motivation are commendable. Therefore, I thank Michelle Ramser, Michelle Szymanski, Michele Cessna, and Audrey Greiner, as well as a few parishioners. I apologize for not having their names. They are also planning to sell flats of flowers after Easter. Please consider this fundraiser as you plan your flower gardens for the spring and summer – each time you look at your flowers, you will remember Saint John Bosco School and all the great memories associated with it! Look for more information after Easter.

Since April is a little less busy than the last few months, there will not be an additional page of explanation of the calendar items. A few items that need some extra information are the Talent Show, Market Day, PTU Family Bingo, and Jump-A-Thon. The talent show will be a fun afternoon, beginning at 1:15 in the gym, where the whole school will watch the 14 or so acts that were chosen for the show. Although all the student acts had merit, Mrs. Keller and I had to narrow the field. We have some singing, some dancing, some magic, some gymnastics, and more! Due to scheduling conflicts, we cannot have an evening show. Please make arrangements if you work and want to join us that afternoon. We welcome everyone! Market Day will continue to be offered in April and May. The proceeds will help PTU provide its annual scholarships to the eighth grade. PTU Family Bingo is always a great evening of fun for all families. Thank you to Mrs. Renee Warren and the PTU for sponsoring a nice family evening. Please stay tuned for more details. Mr. Holzworth will be contacting students in grades three through six to join in the American Red Cross Annual Jump-A-Thon. Please be generous with your donation and encourage your child to participate in this worthy cause. Thank you to Mr. Holzworth for coordinating this event.
    God bless all of you,
    Mrs. Updegrove
