SJB Letter from the Principal

    Dear Saint John Bosco Families,

The beauty of the world that the Creator has given to us is budding and we are in awe of the many wonders that are in our very own backyards. Every year, we say that we cannot believe it is already the fourth quarter of school and that summer is just around the corner. Yet, here we are again! Although things may be different this year, many things are still the same.

The color yearbooks are here and if you ordered one, your child received it last week. They are fantastic. I cannot thank Mrs. Herman, Mrs. Wright, and Mrs. Geng enough for all the work that they did with the student yearbook committee. There are a few extra yearbooks available. The cost is $19.00 (plus $1.45 if you want a “year in review”) and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. Please send a note to the Mrs. Herman with a check if you are interested in purchasing a yearbook.

The beginning of May means the return of the “cool down” uniform. I know that the students look forward to this change in uniform. Please refer to additional sheets in this Thursday folder for a reminder of the cool down uniform parameters. The teachers have planned final field trips and are coordinating the dates for the class picnics for the end of the year. We will have an all school Mass celebrating with the second graders during this special year of sacraments. We have librarians coming to the classrooms to talk to the students about summer reading programs. We will have fourth quarter progress reports in mid-May. We will have the annual spring band concert. As you can see, many annual events remain intact at Saint John Bosco.

We have all gotten accustomed to the marvelous hot lunch program at Saint John Bosco. Mrs. Warren and Mrs. Geng, with the help of many volunteers, provided delicious and nutritious lunch for the children all year long – and always with a smile! The last day for hot lunch is Friday, May 30th. Beginning June 2nd, all students must pack a lunch AND a drink. There will not be hot lunch or milk available after May 30th. Students will still eat in the Bell Tower.

There are many students that we celebrate with this month. As you may have seen in the parish bulletin, three of our eighth grade students participated in an annual “academic challenge” at Saint Edward High School called The Classroom of Champions. The students competed against St. Francis School in Gates Mills and St. Mel in West Park, Cleveland. With 235 points, SJB came in first place. Congratulations to Jacob Rasmussen, Gabrielle Mey, and Monica Marecki – we are all so very proud. As Jacob was telling everyone at the competition about our school, he ended with “We are just great.” And you know what, we are! Thanks also to Mrs. Sgro and Mrs. Roaldi for helping these students prepare.

It seems like I am able to write this entire letter full of thanks and congratulations! Mr. Holzworth coordinated the annual jump-a-thon in April. There were 34 students who participated and collected money for the American Heart Association. Even though all the money has not been collected, they have surpassed their goal and have collected over $1700. You and your children have supported a very worthy cause and I thank you.

As I have contacted various organizations regarding the closing of our school, I always receive a message of prayer and support in return for all the students, families, and faculty. One company, Loyola Press, sent bracelets for all the teachers and students that are white and state, “I Pray.” Students will receive those bracelets today and may wear them in school until the end of the year as we all remember that we do care and we do pray for each other every day. Thank you to all the families and all the support that you constantly provide for your children and the faculty and staff. I know I do not say that enough!

    God bless all of you,
    Mrs. Updegrove
